World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, where it was founded in 1955. Its main aim is to support and promote internationally the work of professional press photographers. Over the years, World Press Photo has evolved into an independent platform for journalism and the free exchange of information.
Each year, an independent jury consisting of 13 members, judges entries in 10 different categories, submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers, magazines from all corners of the world. This year’s World Press competitions attracted 5,508 photographers from 124 countries. In total, 96,298 images were entered in the contest.
This year’s exhibit, which will be shown in 100 venues throughout the world, features 196 photographs, including the winning photo of the year, together with award winning images from each of the 10 contest categories. The high quality of photojournalism involved is considered to set a standard in the field. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Anthony Suau’s winning photograph for 2009 - a black-and-white image that dramatically captures the global financial crisis.
The Philippine run of the World Press Photo Exhibition is a joint partnership of the Konrad Adenauer Asia Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Univeler Philippines, and The Podium, SM City North-EDSA, and the SM Mall of Asia.
