Photo Exhibit
Instituto Cervantes holds Severo Sarduy exhibit–
Explore the journey of one of the most prominent figures of the Hispanic culture as Instituto Cervantes features an exhibit of Severo Sarduy’s photographs, books, and other memorabilia from his life in the Orient.
Called El Oriente de Severo Sarduy, the exhibit captures a snapshot of the late Cuban artist and highlights his extraordinary collection of rare and wonderful objects throughout his travel to Asia.
Sarduy was born on February 25, 1937 in Camaguey, Cuba, where he finished both his elementary and secondary education. He lived in Paris from 1960 until his death in 1993. During the 33-year absence from his native island, he was able to publish novels, poetries, and essays. He was also an art and literature critic and was able to organize three one-man exhibitions of his painting as well as participate in several group exhibitions.

His work as a journalist for 30 years in Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française allowed him to realize programs dedicated to science and culture.
The exhibit at Instituto Cervantes features 75 photographs of Sarduy and the places he travelled as well as the books and paper works that were inspired by such journeys. Several art treasures and memorabilia he collected are also on display.
El Oriente de Severo Sarduy, which will run until January 30, 2010, is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines, AECID, Ministerio de Cultura de España, and the Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales.
