Through a Lens, Clearly

On EDSA and Other Images–

We start today’s column with an invitation to a photo exhibit on the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution. Scores of pictures by photographer Sonny Q. Camarillo of the Camera Club of the Philippines recording every day of the historic event are on view at the library of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation Inc. (BBFI) until March 6. The BBFI is dedicated to honoring and preserving the memories of those who gallantly resisted martial law and the Marcos dictatorial rule. It is located on the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue marked by a towering metal sculpture. Aside from the library, the BBFI also houses the only museum in the country dedicated to the memories of martial rule. Viewing hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Everybody’s welcome!

Still on the topic of EDSA 1986 and martial law, readers may have relevant photos of the period that have not yet been published. Just send them over for printing in this column.

And now to our featured readers. We start with the new contributors.

Ezza Abdullah (www.littlemissezza.multiply.com) of Tawi-Tawi who is now residing and working in Manila writes “I’m a CPA by profession, a shutterbug at heart.” Ezza says that she started exploring the world of photography through Flick’r five years ago. She read a lot about photography, joined various forums, checked out portfolios of local photographers on Multiply, and started shooting with her digital point-and-shoot. In January 2009, she got her first DSLR. She shares: “I was very ecstatic when I first held it in my hand and was very proud to own one, bearing in mind that owning a DSLR camera does not automatically mean that I’ll end up with good shots.” Ezza sent in photos of the sunrise on Panglao Island in Bohol taken last year. She also shares images from her adventures into lomography.

Kenneth Q. Macapugay from the City of San Fernando, Pampanga and now working at Universal Records Inc. writes that he started shooting only four months ago. He shares that he got into photography because “gusto ko pong ilarawan ang sarili ko at ilarawan ang nasa paligid ko.” To further his knowledge on the craft, Kenneth says that he has been doing a lot of reading and researching lately.
